PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and a device that is capable of realizing the improvement of the tracking processing of an object which can act on a general computer at a high speed and also the improvement of the tracking ability of the object. SOLUTION: The video area tracking method and device are the ones where the tracking area of an initial picture is designated against a time-sequentially inputted picture group (S11), the area is divided into plural small areas, a travelling destination detecting processing at every small area is executed by utilizing the correlation of the picture group between the small areas and the picture including them, a largeness is selected at every small area, the small area where the processing for detecting the travelling destination of the small areas in the picture in another time is selected among the ones provided with an individually selected largeness.
