A device for controlling the cooling of glass in furnaces for melting and refining glass is characterized in that the cooling is assured by coolers (18, 19, 20, 21) which are implanted directly into the walls of the furnace, in the zone where the glass may be cooled in order to control its physical characteristics. The cooling action is assured by absorption of radiation emitted by the glass or by the walls and roof of the furnace.
