PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a conversion into an inverter air conditioner by using an ordinary heat pump indoor machine and performing an installation on an outdoor machine. SOLUTION: An outdoor machine 2 is provided with a signal line connection part 21 for transmitting and receiving on/off signals of a compressor. In this case, an outdoor machine drive control unit 30 of an air conditioner is provided with an inverter 32 for supplying variable frequency power to the compressor 22 and a controller 33 for controlling the inverter 33 in such a manner as to gradually raise the rotational speed of the compressor 22 when the on/off signals of the compressor received via the signal line connection part 21 is changed from an on-state to an off-state.
