At least one sputtering device (40) directed towards the rotating anode (10) for generating the x-rays is used to coat the anode periphery (11) with a metal material. A laser ablation device (50) with a target surface (52) is used to to ablate the target material towards the anode periphery with the aid of a laser beam (64) from a laser unit (60, 62) forming a compact, integral source for the emission and absorption spectra within the x-ray region. The device contains a preferably cooled rotating anode inside a vacuum chamber (14) with a gap (12) and an exit window (44) for the generated x-rays, as well as an electron cannon (20) facing the anode.
