PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To grip and change tools with reliability and at high speed. SOLUTION: An automatic tool changer 1 is so constructed that a tool change arm 2 changes toolholders 3 when one toolholder 3 chucked by the tool change arm 2 is unclamped from a spindle 4 and is pressed out by a cylinder disposed within the spindle 4 or when another toolholder 3 is clamped in the spindle 4. A cam 6 for moving the tool change arm 2 is integrally provided with a regulation cam means 14 for allowing any unclamping/clamping action of the toolholders 3 when the tool change arm 2 is to unclamp/clamp them and for checking such action unless the tool change arm 2 is to unclamp/clamp them.
