PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the recording data for allowing the multi-pass recording with a simple configuration even in the case there is a displacement in the row direction of recording element rows. SOLUTION: In the case one row is displaced with respect to another row in a multi-pass recording according to the scanning motion of a recording head of at least two rows of a recording element group, with the superimposition of the scanning motions, the displacement amount is set in a register circuit 202. A data selector 203 corrects a thinning patterns according to the set displacement amount. The corrected thinning pattern and image data are applied with the AND operation by an AND circuit 205 for driving the recording head.
