PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound by converting thioether type sulfur into a sulfoxide without using an environmental pollutant by adding a raw material compound containing thioether type sulfur, etc., to a medium a fungus and culturing the fungus. SOLUTION: A thioether type sulfur-containing raw material compound of formula I [R1 to R6 are each H, a (substituted) lower alkyl or a (substituted) lower alkoxy], etc., e.g. 2-[4-(3-methoxypropoxy)-3-methylpyridine-2- yl]methylthiobenzimidazole, etc.}, is added to a medium for a fungus [e.g. Cunninghamella echinulata MK40 (FERM P-16,902), etc.], and the fungus is cultured to give the objective pyridine derivative of formula II (e.g. a pyridylbenzimidazolyl sulfoxide derivative, etc.), without using an environmental pollutant such as dichloromethane, etc.
