[Also in Division F2] To facilitate engagement of male and female coupling elements 8, 12 forming a splined coupling between a power take-off shaft 6 of a tractor or truck, and a universally jointed driven shaft, the ends of the internal splines 14 in the female element 12 are swaged and compacted to form convergent tapering surfaces 16 such that when the element 12 is moved axially to engage the male element 8, the surfaces 16 contact the ends of the male splines 10 and exert a camming thrust indicating the direction requiring the minimum relative turning of the coupling elements to effect full spline engagement of the coupling. The ends 16 of the splines 14 in the female element 12 are swaged concurrently and the splines subsequently broached to remove any malformation resulting therefrom. |
