The invention consists in an apparatus for characterisation of polarisable particles. The apparatus utilises dielectrophoresis DEP. The particle experiences a force in a nonuniform electric field. Said force is proportional to the electrical properties of the medium and the particle, the size of the particle, and the frequency of the electric field, among other things. The velocity taken on by the particle when subjected to the electric field is a function of the dielectrophoretic force, the force of dynamic Stokes friction, and the effective weight. The apparatus consists of a chamber into which the particles are introduced and subjected to a dielectrophoretic force. By quantifying the velocity and acceleration taken on by the particle, we can learn which forces are acting on it, characterising the particle since, as already stated, these forces are characteristic of the particle. The advantages of this invention are its structural simplicity and that it is able to characterise two parameters, the geometry and the dielectric characteristics of the particle. <IMAGE>
