SOLUTION: This automatic focusing device possesses a photographing optical system for forming a subject image, an image pickup means 5 photoelectrically converting the luminous flux of the object transmitted through the photographing optical system into an electric signal, a high-frequency component detecting means 14 detecting a high-frequency component from a photographed image signal converted by the image pickup means, a driving means 22 adjusting the focal position of the photographing optical system, a driving controlling means 19 controlling the driving means based on the output of the high-frequency component detecting means, an auxiliary light emitting means 28 to radiate auxiliary light to the object and an emitted light quantity controlling means 15 controlling an emitted light quantity by the auxiliary light emitting means in accordance with the high-frequency component quantity of the photographed image signal obtained by the image pickup means.
