PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device that can digitally record an input analog signal and retrieve recorded information by a clear cue review image regardless of a simple configuration. SOLUTION: Magnetic heads 18a, 18b record a luminance signal Fid and a chrominance signal Fcd from a digital recording system unit 37 on a digital information recording track of a magnetic tape 17 in the case of recording and record a luminance signal Fia and a chrominance signal Fca from an analog recording system unit 35 on an analog information recording track adjacent to the digital information recording track through compression. In the case of retrieval, each analog information recording track is sequentially fed fast and reproduced by each program-search time and the reproduced image is displayed on a monitor as a cue review image. The retrieved recorded information is reproduced from the digital information recording track. The magnetic recording and reproducing device can make a long time recording for broadband video signals and employs a simple circuit at a low manufacturing cost to retrieve a clear cue review image without distortion smoothly in a short time.
