PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely discriminate whether eyes are opened or closed without being affected by any personal difference such as the direction of a face or the length of eyelashes by acquiring a face image, detecting the part of the upper eyelids from the face image and discriminating whether the eyes are opened or closed based on the shape of the upper eyelids. SOLUTION: A CPU finds the eyes out of the inputted face image. This processing is executed in the state of traveling while a car speed is higher than a prescribed value and a driver gazes at the front. Next, it is discriminated whether the eyes can be found out or not, and when the eyes are found out, the positions of these eyes are tracked in successively inputted face images. By labeling edge images, a part 100a (eye opening state) of the upper eyelids is extracted. Next, a part lower than the part 100a of the upper eyelids is binarized, and terminal points A and B on the left and right sides of the binarized part are extracted. Next, the binarized part is vertically bisected by a line connecting the terminal points A and B and the area ratio of upper and lower parts is calculated and stored. This area ratio becomes the opening degree of the eyes. |
