The split lock casing (24,26) is fixed on the steering column's (12) tubular sheath (10). One part (26) holds (34) the motor (36), whose drive pinion (48) meshes with a gear nut (32), having rotary but not axial freedom, in the other part (24). The nut's rotation drives a screwed rod (76) with a terminal tee-bar (88) that takes with it, in rising, a link-plate (92) pinned (108,110) to the lock bolt (28), disengaging the latter from the steering column. Tabs (112) on the plate simultaneously compress two springs (60) which maintain pressure on the bolt during re-engagement. If the bolt stops on a raised section (18) between the column's axial grooves (16), the tee-bar continues, sliding within the forked link-plate, to a preset stop. On the first steering movement the bolt enters a locking groove (16). |
