The invention relates to a method for the hydrolytic polymerisation of epsilon -caprolactam to polyamide-6, comprising at least a step in which the polymerisation of epsilon -caprolactam to polyamide-6 is initiated in the presence of water, characterised inthat the step is carried out in a reactor or a reactor zone in which water is supplied via the gas phase. The reactor or reactor zone is preferably provided with means by which a large self-renewing interface between the molten phase and the gas phase is effected. In a very short time, nylon-6 of a high degree of polymerisation is obtained, an eta rel = 4.0 being obtained, inter alia, in 3 hours under otherwise normal reaction conditions.
