PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of maintaining printing quality and reducing an amount of consumption of toner and a method for reducing the amount of consumption of the toner. SOLUTION: This printer comprises a developing section 1 for developing data transmitted from a host device into bit-map data, a memory 2 for storing the bit-map developed by the developing section 1, a profile protection shape matrix extracting section 3 for extracting a profile protection shape matrix for preventing a profile from disappearing, a printing section 7 that stores template data and a toner consumption saving pattern and prints dot data of the bit-map data stored in the memory 2 in accordance with a shape of the profile protection shape matrix. The extracted matrix data and template data is compared with each other. When the data is coincident with each other, for example, a target pixel in the central section of the matrix data is converted to a toner consumption amount reducing pattern. When the data is coincident with the template, the number of pixels in a part of the image data is reduced, thereby reducing the amount of the consumption of the toner. |
