PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-purity metal phosphide polycrystal having a composition slightly derived from a stoichiometric composition and to provide a method for synthesizing the polycrystal. SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing a high-purity metal phosphide polycrystal comprises packing phosphorus 4, a metal 3 and boron oxide 2A having 0.5-20 mass % water content into a crucible 1, heating the crucible in a furnace at a temperature TM1 to 400 deg.C to make the boron oxide 2A into a softened flow state in an open system of an inert gas flow. Then, an inert gas is introduced into the furnace under pressure P1 in which pressure PRS in the furnace at a reaction starting temperature TRS of the metal 3 and phosphorus 4 exceeds the vapor pressure of phosphorus at TRS, the phosphorus 4, the metal 3 and the boron oxide 2A are heated to TRS, the metal 3 is reacted with the phosphorus 4 to synthesize the objective high-purity metal phosphide polycrystal. The high-purity metal phosphide is synthesized by the synthesis method.
