PURPOSE: An apparatus for receiving an image signal adapting a vestigial side band modulation method and method for selecting a level mode in the same are provided to exactly remove a co-channel interference without effectiveness of a multi-pass error or a phase noise error and remove the co-channel interference with a simple hardware composition only. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for receiving an image signal adapting a vestigial side band modulation method and method for selecting a level mode in the same include an application equalizer(110), phase tracer(112), trellis decoder(114), an error measure and mode remover(160). The application equalizer is to make an equalization a first signal which a level is fixed and then inputted, or increase the level to a second signal and make an equalization. The phase tracer is to remove a phase noise of the equalized signal according to an inputted level mode selection signal. The trellis decoder is to decode using the trellis decoder the output of the phase tracer and offer an output according to an inputted level mode selection signal. The error measure and mode remover is to measure an error of a signal offered an output from the phase tracer, compare the measured error value with a threshold value, and a level mode selection signal according to the result of the comparison.
