PURPOSE: 4-jod-2£n-(n-alkyl-aminocarbonyl)-aminosulfonyl|-benzoic acid methyl ester and derivatives thereof are provided, which are suitable as intermediate products in the production of herbicidal sulfonyl ureas. CONSTITUTION: Compounds as intermediate products in the production of herbicidalsulfonyl ureas are represented by formula (I) wherein R stands for (substituted) alkyl or (substituted) cycloalkyl. The compounds (I) are produced by (a) diazotising a compound of formula (II) in the presence of a H+X-acid, wherein X- stands for an equivalent to an anion, to produce new compounds (diazonium salts) of formula (III), (b) reacting the compound of formula (III) in the presence of iodide ions to produce the compound (IV) and (c) reacting the compound of formula (IV) with an isocyanate of formula (V) R - N = C = O, wherein R is defined as in formula (I), to produce the compound of formula (I).
