PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a small image scanned with high resolutions in various output sizes without impairing output image quality by deciding the final scan resolution based on a scan window size, i.e., a scan area. SOLUTION: An image type is checked to decide whether color scanning is requested (block 102), and when the color scanning is requested, an image factor is set (block 104). When the image factor is set, a scan window size, i.e., a scan area is examined and the scan window size is checked to decide whether it is equal to maximum scan width or maximum scan length to which either scan width or scan length corresponds (block 112). When either the width or length of the scan window is set to the corresponding maximum window size, a resolution corrector is set (block 114). The final scan resolution is calculated with an initial resolution, the resolution corrector, a printer factor and an image factor as functions.
