A method of detecting the concentration of a constituent of interest in a sample in a liquid carrier comprising the steps of illuminating a sample with a light source (10), splitting the beam reflected or transmitted from said sample into at least two parts, directing one part of said beam onto a first detection means and a second part of said beam onto a second detection means, said second detection means being arranged to provide an output which is a measure of the background component in the beam from the sample and the output of said first and second detection means being paired so as to obtain a background corrected measurement of the concentration of the constituent of interest. <IMAGE> |
