PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tobacco flavor and taste enhancer that imparts the body and smoke richness of flue-cured type to tobacco products by using at least one of 2,6-dimethoxyphenols as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This is at least one kind of 2,6-dimethoxyphenol represented by formula I (R1 is H, a saccharide residue; R2 is the formula: -CH=CHCH2OH, the formula: -CHO, the formula: -COOH, and the formula: -CH=CHCOOH) where sinapyl alcohol is excluded. The objective tobacco flavor and taste enhancer is obtained by allowing syringaaldehyde of formula II to condense with tetra-O-acetyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl bromide of formula III (Ac is acetyl) in the presence of silver oxide, allowing the reaction product to react with monoethyl malonate, followed by reduction of the ester group and deprotection to the objective product: syringin that can imparts the body of flue-cured type to tobacco products as a tobacco flavor and taste enhancer.
