A vibration damping device comprises at least one permanent magnet 6 having ferromagnetic end elements 7 and a series of intermediate ferromagnetic elements 9 coaxially mounted with respect to the magnet 6. In the spaces between the elements 9 are placed plates 5 which may be integral with or connected to a tubular casing 3, the plates being of a conductive material such as copper. The casing is mounted on the magnet by elastic buttons 12 such that the casing and hence the plates can move limitedly transversely of the magnet and hence the magnetic field. The device may be held against a bar subject to lateral vibrations (Fig. 4, not shown), or may be mounted within a bar subject to vibrations (Fig. 5, not shown), both these embodiments being connected with lathework. |
