PURPOSE: A vortex chamber type diesel engine is provided to reduce smoke and to improve durability of the front end of an entrance by generating a strong swirl in a compression stroke and easily spreading flames in an explosion stroke. CONSTITUTION: A diesel engine having a vortex chamber includes: a cylinder block(4) embedding a bore(3) guiding lifting of a piston(1); a cylinder head(5) combined to an upper portion of the cylinder block to form a vortex chamber(7) as a combustion chamber with the cylinder block; and a flame spreading control unit formed at a portion of the vortex chamber to control the vortex chamber via an ECU(Electronic Control Unit) for air supply in a compression stroke and flame spreading to a portion of the vortex chamber in an explosion stroke. When power is generated, air is sucked by a strong swirl generated in the vortex chamber through an air intake port(13) and a flame spreading port(11) connected with an air conduit(15) according to lifting up of the piston. If fuel injected by an injector(8) is exploded, the ECU turns on a solenoid valve(17) to supply hydraulic pressure to an actuator(19) of the flame spreading control unit and to intermittent the air conduit. Flames generated by explosion in the vortex chamber form an air wake only through the flame spreading port and apply an exploding force to the piston. The flames are naturally spread along the inclination of the flame spreading port. Thus, degradation in durability of the flame spreading port is avoided. Additionally, the air conduit provides an expanded intake area in an intake stroke. Therefore, air suction capacity is increased.
