PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for easily and accurately measuring the interaction between ultrasonic waves and light for measuring a light-scattering medium. SOLUTION: A relatively thick light beam is applied to a light-scattering medium 10. In the light-scattering medium 10, the light beam is partially modulated by the operation of an ultrasonic beam B and the light constituent is received by a photo detector 24. At the same time, a light constituent that was not modulated in the light-scattering medium 10 is detected by the photo detector 24. Interference is generated since the light constituents are simultaneously detected and, as a result, a beat signal is detected. The beat signal indicates the interaction between ultrasonic waves and light. Since internal reference light is utilized, a mirror and the like are not required.
