An apparatus having particular use as a fluorometric standard, the apparatus including a housing adapted to be placed within a fluorometer and containing a standard material, e.g., in the form of a fluorescent fiber. The housing, in turn, provides one or more apertures configured to provide a predetermined absorption, excitation and/or emission level in the course of using the standard within the particular device. The aperture(s) can, independently, be either fixed or adjustable.
