PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance coating apparatus capable of certainly uniformizing the thickness of a coating film in the direction traversing a base material web in a level exceeding the mechanical processing accuracy of each constitutional element of the coating apparatus. SOLUTION: A coating apparatus is equipped with a backup roll 14 and a coating head 18 having the nozzle end surface 16 opposed to the outer peripheral surface 10 of the backup roll 14. The coating head 18 is structurally divided into the first part 32 containing at least the nozzle end surface 16 and the second part 34 adjacent to the first part 32 and these first and second parts 32, 34 are mutually bonded integrally. The first and second parts 32, 34 are formed from materials mutually different in the coefficient of linear expansion. Therefore, by closely regulating the temp. of the coating head 18, the precise thickness control of a coating film in a level exceeding the mechanical processing accuracy of each constitutional element of the coating head 18 can be extremely easily executed with good reproducibility and the thickness of the coating film can be certainly uniformized in the direction traversing a base material web.
