PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer capable of easily controlling the force contact pressure of a thermal head with respect to a platen by the number of steps of a motor from a position close to the head-down state. SOLUTION: A detecting means 29 for detecting a position close to a thermal head 2 in the head-down state, and a control means 30 for controlling the contact pressure of the thermal head 2 by controlling the number of steps of a stepping motor 6 necessary for moving a cam follower 23 until the thermal head 2 can develop a force contact pressure to a set degree from the position close to the head-down state are provided.
