PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compsn. and method for lubricating transmission gears including various types of continuously variable transmission gears. SOLUTION: This compsn. comprises (a) a major amt. of an oil having a lubricating viscosity, (b) a shear-stability viscosity improver in a viscosity- improving amt., (c) at least about 0.1 wt.% overbased metal salt for imparting a total alkali value of from about 0.5 to about 10 to the compsn., (d) at least about 0.1 wt.% at least one phosphorus compd., and (e) about 0.1-0.45 wt.% combination of at least two friction modifiers at least one of which is selected from the group consisting of zinc salts of 10C or higher fatty acids, hydrocarbylimidazolines each having a 12C or higher hydrocarbyl group, and borated epoxides, the modifier selected as above being contained in an amt. of about 0.03 wt.%, provided the total amt. of friction modifiers is limited so that the compsn., when used as a lubricant, provides a friction coefficient between metals of at least about 0.120. |
