The invention concerns a method for treating waste (D) by adding an amount of at least an alkaline reagent (R) comprising steps which consist in: continuously supplying the waste to be treated into a mixer (1); continuously adding to the treated waste a measured amount of at least an alkaline reagent; closely and continuously mixing for a specific time interval the waste and the alkaline reagent; and simultaneously transporting the resulting mixture through the mixer; then extracting said mixture from the mixer. The invention is characterised in that during the mixing step, the waste and the alkaline reagent are successively mixed at a first speed (V1), during a first retention time (t1), and at a second speed (V2) not greater then the first speed (V1), during a second retention time (12) longer than the time (t1).
