Thin conducting sheet, e.g. copper or aluminium, is drawn off a storage drum across a table with a transverse row of adjustable cutters, which divide it into parallel strips (11) of the desired width(s), and corresponding guides which separate the strips laterally. Layers (10) of e.g. polyester insulation are then applied over and under the strip array, forming an integrated ribbon, drummed for storage, with individually insulated embedded conductors. Cutting units sever cable drawn off the drum at the start and finish of each major direct run (c). Subsets (s) of cores required to reach intermediate terminating points are formed by slitting the insulation lengthwise where required and folding each subset out of the main run at the deviation points (31). The cores are then fitted with connectors at the originating (25) and terminating (24) points, ready for installation.
