A method of treating a liquid composition to extract one or more components thereof, the method comprising contacting the liquid composition with fragmented shell, or part shell, of a crustacean, said one or more components having a binding affinity with said shell, and separating said shell from said liquid composition. The invention also provides for desorption/elution of the component for subsequent recycling and/or further treatment prior to disposal.
