The photobioreactor comprises a cylindrical core or support structure 10, a plurality of transparent tubes 20,22,24 supported thereby, means for causing a synthesis mixture to flow through each of the tubes and means for withdrawing a biomass synthesis product from the mixture. The tubes, of which there may be from two to ten, are helically wound in parallel on the core structure and pegs may project from the structure to support the tubes. The synthesis mixture may comprise plant material such as Spirulina (blue green algae) together with essential nutrients for growth.
