1,184,998. D.C. excited alternators. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. 29 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 15292/68. Heading H2A. A disruptive load, e.g. an electronic flashover gap 3 serving to pump a laser, is supplied with short duration very high peak power electric energy pulses via a rectifier bridge 2 by a H.F. alternator 1 having a high inertia or coupled to a flywheel, and arranged in parallel with the load, with its cathode connected to the bridge negative terminal, is a controlled rectifier 4 e.g. an ignition or a thyratron. Firing of the rectifier short-circuits the load, whereby the pulses have an almost square waveform. As shown, the alternator is driven by a prime mover 14 and is excited by a field winding 5 fed via a regulating resistor 6 by either the bridge 2 or an auxiliary rectifier bridge. Closure of a switch 11 discharges a capacitor 9 into the field winding 5 to initiate an output pulse, whilst at the end of a pulse a controlled rectifier 8 is fired so that the field winding feeds into a capacitor 7 and thereby the alternator is rapidly de-excited. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 a controlled rectifier (22) in series with the load is triggered by a device (21) responsive to the rectifier bridge output voltage. |
