PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an algicidal agent and algicidal method that shows high controlling effect against Bacillariophyta. SOLUTION: A water-soluble iodine complex and an organic acid and/or an inorganic acid are used and the pH of the mixture is adjusted to <=5 to give the objective algicidal agent. This algicidal agent is used to treat algae. In the case of treatment in a short time within 1 minute using a kind of diving boat, the iodine concentration is set to 10 ppm-500 ppm, while in the case of soaking for 1-10 minutes, the concentration is preferably adjusted to 3-10 ppm. In a preferred embodiment, Povidone iodine is used as an iodine water-soluble complex, the organic acid is, for example, lactic acid, acetic acid, citric acid or malic acid, and the pH is adjusted by using hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid.
