PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a fast and positive sensing of defective seals such as biting of contents, adhesion of the contents to the seal surface, too much seal or too defective seal and slant seals or the like to be carried out by a method wherein a good state or a poor state of the seal is judged in response to temperature information at the seal portion just after application of heat seal. SOLUTION: When a retort pouch food or the like are packed in a filling line for a packing member, it sometimes happens that the defective sealing such as biting of contents at the pouch, adhesion of the contents at the surface of the pouch and too much amount of seal or too less amount of seal and the like are found. If the contents are bitten at the seal portion, a temperature drop may occur at the bitten portion due to the fact that the temperature of the contents is lower than the heat seal temperature, resulting in that the bitten portion can be detected as a defective seal. In view of this fact, a temperature distribution at the seal portion just after the heat seal operation is measured by processing thermal image information taken by an infrared-ray camera. With such an arrangement as above, if there is a defective seal around the pouch, it can be positively detected and so the defective seal that could not be discriminated by naked eyes can be detected.
