<p>The invention relates to a drive system, especially for an automobile, comprising a drive unit, especially an internal combustion engine (1), a gear mechanism (2) with variable transmission between said drive unit (1) and the drive mechanism (4), especially continuously or finely graduated variable transmission, at least one secondary unit (5) driven by said drive unit, especially an electric generator, and a control mechanism (11). Said control mechanism selects the transmission ratio from within a range of possible transmission ratio values by taking into account the individual efficiency functions of both the vehicle drive and the secondary unit (s) (5), including their drive mechanism, to determine the maximum possible overall efficiency. The individual efficiency functions are weighted in the overall efficiency level according to the proportion of output attributable to the vehicle drive and the secondary unit (s).
