The invention relates to a method for mechanically machining opposite sides of the timber joint notch on logs for the manufacture of log structures. The method according to the invention is characterised in that all timber joint notches in the same timber joint are made in one operation. This is based on the idea of using notching bits, which are located on a square frame and move apart, simultaneously performing the working movement and the machining. The invention also relates to a device for performing the method. The device comprises a square frame 4, located so that it swivels bit slides 8, 8' and 9, 9' located around a vertical axis on the front of the square frame, which slides move on guides 5 incorporated into the square frame and are provided with bit motor 7, cylindrical bit 10 and taper bit 11, which machine the timber joint notches. The bit slides 8, 8' and 9, 9' are connected to one another by chains 6, which like a square surround the chain sprockets 18, 19 and 20 fixed to the frame 4 and obtain their drive power by way of a transport motor 13 and a double-strand chain sprocket 17. <IMAGE>
