PURPOSE: A power converter for an elevator is provided to reduce the whole costs by being able to show an excellent control efficiency of the converter, and to show the efficiency of the converter without a separate transformer till a specific range though the size of the power voltage is difference according to an area. CONSTITUTION: The power converter for an elevator to be operated in high efficiency without a separate transformer for the power specification according to an area by comprising: a main contactor(16) contacted on an angle of three-phase power; resistances(R1 ¯ R3) for charging contacted in the main contactor(16) each in parallel; a direct voltage detector(5a) to detect if the main contactor(16) is the off state by a common power controller(7) and by a common power limit establishing unit(8) of a controller(300), and to detect a direct voltage; an invalid component current signal generator(18) to generate an invalid power according to the size of the detected direct voltage.
