PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the recording area of a magnetic recording medium from being ruptured by a scanning mechanism part. SOLUTION: A magnetic tape 3d is wound round a rotary cylinder 4 by using guide posts 5, and the information is recorded by a rotary magnetic head. When the temporary stop is instructed, the part of the recording area T1 on the magnetic tape 3d is taken up inside a cassette 3a, thereby the recording area is prevented from bringing into contact with the scanning mechanism part including the rotary cylinder 4. Thus, by moving the magnetic tape 3d to the unused area T2 for turning it into the retreating state, the recording area T1 is not scratched, then recorded data are protected.
