In an ATM switch, an internal cell converting portion converts cells input from a transmission line to internal cells with added priority control information set in advance within the switch. The ATM switching portion routes the above-mentioned internal cell and transmits it to a priority control portion 40. A priority control portion is established for each class represented by the priority control of information and comprises a class unit buffer. The priority control portion executes priority control for the internal cell through the pertinent class unit buffer based on the priority control information added to the cell. The internal cell converting portion converts the internal cell, after priority control, to a usual ATM cell without the priority control information and outputs the ATM cell to a transmission line.
