The composition of one or more selected soluble sugars and one or more selected dicarboxylic acids into a feed supplement for ruminant animals that maintains the appropriate level of lactic acid and pH of the rumen, and optimizes the availability of energy and nutrients for milk production or growth. The composition also includes one or more selected mineral salts and/or fat, fiber or flavor freshener.
