PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic stop device for a side shift mechanism of a fork lift in a simple structure and at a low cost, capable of doing safe work by selecting a center of gravity corresponding to the length of a freezing container and automatically stopping a spreader so as to position the selected center of gravity to the lateral center of a body. SOLUTION: A fork lift is provided with automatic stop means 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 for clamping a freezing container with clamping members 40a, 40b of a spreader 40, selecting the direction of shift with side shift starting means 2, 3 to start a side cylinder 35 and controlling the side shift cylinder 35 to be stopped when a detecting means 51 for the center of gravity of the freezing container is operated. A center of gravity setting means can be provided for detecting the length of the freezing container and setting the center of gravity corresponding to this length.
