PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pentahydroxyindolizidine compound which is extracted from the plant Eugenia uniflora, has an α-glucosidase-inhibiting effect without side effects such as enteric canal gas symptom and hepatopathy, and is useful for treating diabetes, obesity, etc. SOLUTION: This compound [e.g.(-)-(1S,2R,6S,7R,8R,8aR)-1,2,6,7,8- pentahydroxyindolizidine shown by formula I] is obtained extracting, with 4 pts.wt. of hot water, the short tree Eugenia uniflora which belongs to the family Myrtaceae and grows naturally in Paraguay and Brazil, and treating the obtained extract by filtration and so on, if necessary, followed by drying the obtained extract to give dry powder. When it is administered orally, binders such as starch and disintegrators such as hydroxypropylstarch may be formulated. The obtained oral agent is administered at a dose of 1-10 g/adult/d or so in 1-3 portion(s). |
