A rapid plasma freezer (10) has a main body (12) which encloses confined freezer spaces for freezing plasma containing packages therein. Temperature regulation of the freezer spaces is performed with the use of an associated refrigeration unit either mounted commonly wiht the freezer or separate therefrom. There are thermally conductive upright plates (32, 34) located within the freezer spaces arranged as a series of opposed pairs of plates, each pair of opposed plates having substantially planar surfaces that generally face each other so as to define a cavity (38) therebetween for receiving therein one or more plasma containing package. The plates have flow tubes (36) located therewithin that carry refrigerant liquid at a desired temperature for cooling the opposed surfaces of the plates (32, 34) so as to enable heat exchange between the plasma and refrigerant liquid sufficient to freeze the plasma as required. Each pair of plates has a movable member (34) and a fixed member (32), whereby the movable member (34) can be pivotally moved by the effect of a lever (40) or motor in a first direction so as to create an enlarged cavity (38) into which the one or more plasma containing package may be inserted or from which such package may be withdrawn. When the movable member (34) is pivoted in a second direction opposite the first direction with the one or more package located between the fixed and movable member, the plates (32, 34) provide thermal contact with the package for freezing the plasma as required. |
