Purification of acrylic acid (I) comprises crystallization from a mixture containing (I) and a solvent (II) with a higher boiling point than (I). An Independent claim is also included for the production of (I) by preparing: (a) a gaseous reaction product with the composition of a reaction mixture from catalytic gas phase oxidation of 3 carbon (C) alkanes, alkenes, alkanols, alkanals and/or their precursors to (I); (b) absorbing the reaction product in (II) to give a mixture containing (I) and (II); and (c) purification as above.
