To take account of the different incineration times of refuse, ranging from tires to wood, an auxiliary furnace (2) is provided into which these materials are fed before the final disposal in the main furnace (1). The auxiliary furnace lies in a horizontal plane so that a different dwell time can be arranged depending on the point (3,4,5) at which the material is fed onto the moving grate.
