PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extra fine steel wire and a stranded wire for improving the corrosion fatigue characteristic of high strength extra fine steel wire and stranded wire. SOLUTION: The high strength extra fine steel wire has a composition containing 0.6-1.5% C, 0.1-1.0% Si, 0.1-1.0% Mn, and <=0.005% Al and also containing, if necessary, at least one element among Cr, rare earth elements, Cu, Ni, Co, and B and also has <=0.40 mm wire diameter and >=3600 MPa tensile strength. In order to improve the corrosion fatigue characteristic of the stranded wire, a metallic or organic film of 0.01 to 0.5μm thickness is applied to the surface and its angle of contact with an aqueous solution containing one or more ions among C1-, NO3-, SO42-, and PO43- is regulated to >=30 deg..
