PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect the sliding face and to prevent the MR element from wearing, even if a magneto-resistance effect type magnetic head and a magnetic recording medium slide at high speed, by forming a protective film on the sliding face of the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: A protective film 8 is formed on a tape sliding face 1a in an MR head 1. By so forming the protective film 8, a magneto-resistance effect element is protected from wearing in the case where information is reproduced from a magnetic recording medium 2 by the high speed sliding of the MR head 1 and the medium 2. As the material for this protective film 8, a non-magnetic material of a high hardness is used, which reduces the friction against the magnetic recording medium 2. In addition, use of a material superior in heat diffusivity diffuses heat that generates from sliding against the magnetic recording medium 2, reducing noise (thermal asperity) due to change in the resistance of the magneto-resistance effect film by heat, and thereby enabling stable reproduction.
