PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head which is capable of preventing the electrical shorting between the hard magnetic layer and soft magnetic layer of a magnetic tunnel element, averts an operation failure and is high in the reliability of signal reading. SOLUTION: This magnetic head 1 for executing reading and writing of the signal to a recording medium M is constituted by arranging the magnetic tunnel element 2 having the hard magnetic layer 5 and soft magnetic layer 3 varying in coercive force from each other and an insulating layer 4 interposed between both in such a manner that its film thickness direction parallels with the recording medium M. In such a case, the surface of the magnetic tunnel element 2 facing the recording medium M is recessed in the portion of the hard magnetic layer 5 than the portion of the soft magnetic layer 3.
