PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit stable running of a head and to enhance S-N ratio in high density recording by forming an underlayer comprising Cr, Mo, W, Nb, Ta or an alloy based on these in a specified thickness between a nonmagnetic disk substrate and a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: An underlayer comprising Cr, Mo, W, Nb, Ta or an alloy based on these is formed in 5-500 nm thickness on a substrate and crystals are grown under orientation so that the (100) or (110) crystal lattice faces of the underlayer are made parallel to the substrate to enhance magnetic anisotropy in the running direction of a head. A magnetic layer preferably comprises Co, Fe, Ni or an alloy based on these and it is preferable that crystals are grown under orientation so that the (110) crystal lattice faces of the magnetic layer are made almost parallel to the substrate because magnetic anisotropy is enhanced by the growth. When a layer of a carbide such as WC or (W-Mo)C is used as a protective layer, sliding and corrosion resistances can be enhanced.
